Aerial Aviation & Aerospace Photographer
A
erial Aviation & Aerospace Photographer, CHAD SLATTERY, presents "Dolly in the Sky & Things with Wings" at C&F's photography-networking dinner. Chad will begin with a very brief look at his career as a magazine generalist, then move into an overview of how and why it veered towards aviation and aerospace. He will touch on the challenges and rewards of specialization. Throughout the presentation he will discuss lighting techniques, the importance of Photoshop, the joy of perspective control lenses, the role of failure, what's private about private jets, what he loves about the LAPD's new flashlight, and the amazing world of air-to-air photography. RSVP required in advance. (626) 794-7447.
Chad Slattery’s passion for aviation began early. By fourth grade he was building plastic model airplane kits, somehow gluing wings and wheels to the kitchen table on a regular basis. In sixth grade he mooched his Mom’s old Kodak camera to photograph a MiG-17 model skywards through the patio glass table. A career was born. His only real job was an 18-month stint as a Travel Writer for the Automobile Club of Southern California. He began his photography career in the editorial arena, shooting for magazines from Forbes to Sunset to Smithsonian. But when Smithsonian started up Air & Space Magazine, he got sucked into aviation again. He's now a Contributing Editor there, where he's photographed and sometimes written 30 cover stories.
For the past twenty years Chad has specialized exclusively in stills photography for aviation and aerospace customers worldwide. On the ground, he photographs extensively for the business aircraft community. In the air, Chad has flown over 200 sorties in specialized photo Learjets, a record unmatched by any other photographer. His clients include Boeing, Dassault, Dynamic Aviation, Embrarer, HondaJet, Lockheed Martin, Masten Space Systems, Orbital Sciences, and Surf Air.
Chad still does magazine assignments. His images are regularly published in Air & Space/Smithsonian, where he serves as a Contributing Editor and has had 30 covers. He also contributes to Aviation Week, AOPA Pilot, Flight Training, Business Jet Traveler, Executive Controller, Pro Pilot, and Volare. In 2000 he co-founded ISAP: the International Society for Aviation Photography. He is also a member of NBAA, AOPA, the SoCal Aviation Association, and the Aero Club of Southern California.
Chad is married to the lovely and patient Donna Lee. They have two children; the son is pre-med at UCSB, and the daughter is a software engineer who wrote her thesis on early computer use in the Space Shuttle. Chad's hobbies include bicycling, voracious reading, and collecting vintage airplane models.
