Award-winning, Fine Art Digital Still Life Photographer

n a galaxy far, far, away, Debbi K. Swanson Patrick came to a Clickers and Flickers meeting and met ED MARTIN. Her world changed forever.  DEBBI  K. SWANSON-PATRICK,  Award-winning, Fine Art Digital Still Life Photographer  presents "Telling Images - Fine Art Digital Still Lifes using a Scanner" at C&F  Photo-Networking Dinner at The Castaway in Burbank. RSVP required in advance.  Pay Pal available at

Deb writes “I saw his stunning images and freaked out. “How do you do that!?” I asked.  And he shared his story. I asked if I could come visit him at his studio. Dawn arranged the group holiday party at Ed and Sandy’s house. Ed took me under his wing and showed me his image wonderland and revealed his incredible way of seeing life and art. I told him I was going home to create a scan and did so. I sent that first image, “Pitcher of Life,” to Dawn who forwarded it to Ed. I still have his email reply. He said it was so beautiful, could he trade me?  I knew then that this art form was for me.  I’d been a photographer since high school, dabbled in painting, and was very excited to try this new art form—creating still lifes on a flat bed scanner. I was lucky to have a quality Epson scanner but soon had to upgrade my computer and hard drives to handle the editing of such large files. It’s been a blast except for that damn dust on the scanner bed!!!”

A journalism graduate of Cal State Northridge, Deb worked for design leaders including Saul Bass, celebrities including Bob Hope, and has more than 2,000 articles published about theatre, movies, business, and celebrities of every description. While writing she worked as a Marketing and Communications Director at City of Hope and in fundraising for Caltech, always telling stories with words, sometimes video.

Thanks to Ed she has developed her scanning techniques to often tell stories, about a person or place, using flowers, plants, insects, jewelry and assorted objects instead of words. She began calling her work “Telling Images.”  She usually prints her images on metal, jokingly “putting petals to the metal.” While some are more minimalist, it’s often a game of “Where’s Waldo,” in trying to find all the elements in the image. Even with all this new tech her images have an Old Masters look.  She creates these both as her own fine art pieces as well as by commission for special personal or historic occasions. “Shortly after meeting Ed my extraordinary husband Steve died and I created a memory piece in his honor, leading me to do that for others. It’s my greatest pleasure.”

Debbi began entering shows and winning awards, including a Merit Award from the Professional Photographers of Los Angeles and several art group shows.   She has shown and won awards for her work at Vroman’s Bookstore, Caltech, San Marino’s Crowell Library, Paso Robles Festival of the Arts, Paso Robles wineries Sculpterra, Pianetta, and Vina Robles, El Portal Theatre, and most recently as part of Altadena Open Studios since 2015. She’s active with several art groups including Angeles Crest Art Guild. Her image “La Bee en Rose” was displayed for eight months at San Marino City Hall, as selected by the mayor and KCRW’s Art Talk host, Edward Goldman. She was also recently featured in ProPhotoWest magazine. Her fine art cards can be found in several stores in and around Altadena.
