Photojournalist
R
AUL ROA, has been a photojournalist for 21 years in Southern California. He worked for the Pasadena Star News before jumping to the Los Angeles Times Community News department. He covers News, Features, Sports and Food in Glendale, Burbank and La Cañada Flintridge. He states he is "an avid citizen scientist focusing on wildlife, nature and astrophotography." He enjoys birding and traveling on his free time. As a personal passion, Raul has been taking photographs of airplanes crossing the moon every month for the last two-and-a-half years. He states "Unlike many other photographers who grab a once-in-a-lifetime shot of a plane crossing the moon by chance, I have developed a unique technique that is about 95% accurate in predicting planes crossing the moon. My group, The Lunartics, which includes world-famous photojournalist and Pulitzer Prize winner NICK UT (Associated Press Photographer - Napalm Girl), go out monthly and usually come back with spectacular images of planes crossing the moon."
Raul will also talk about the unique manner in which he fell into the very specific niche of astrophotography where he captures images of planes seemingly crossing the moon. He will talk about the initial evening where he decided to attempt to capture planes crossing the moon instead of waiting for a lucky chance at the opportunity. He will share the technique he developed over 2.5 years that almost guarantees a spectacular images by the end of the evening instead of going out blindly and hoping for the best. Raul started and conducts The Lunartics - Moon Photography workshops because a) A once-in-a-lifetime shot becomes an obsession for the Lunartics; (b) With feet firmly planted on the ground, these astrophotographers create what many call an impossible shot; and (c) One photo launched an obsessive quest for the elusive image. The Lunartics have received press coverage in Travel & Leisure Magazine; New York Times, LA Weekly, Denmark's Politiken, and on national TV on CBS. "As for the godfather of the group, Roa, like any explorer, says that the more he sees, the more he realizes is left to discover."
